The Mercy of God

What a divine subject this is! I love to lay in my bed at night and just gaze, as it were, in wonder at the mercy of our heavenly Father. Let us contemplate this for a moment. God wanted a people, a family that He could call His own. But He did not want robots, so He created them in His own image with a free will. He crowned the first man Adam, with glory and honour and gave him and his descendants dominion and authority over every thing on the earth. It was to be a kingdom that God placed completely in the hands of mankind. He also placed objects in their path that they would have to overcome, in so exercising their will, for the purpose of creating a stronger bond between them. In having these choices man would be given the opportunity to chose to glorify God or themselves as well as creating a trust with God. Well, man decided that he himself, wanted to be a god and chose to ignore the command that he was given and ignorantly perhaps, but all the same Adam stepped off the throne of the kingdom of this earth and gave the crown to the present king, Lucifer.

So man turned from his Maker and the curse of death passed from Adam through his seed, to all men. God still did not give up His original plan to have a family though. He chose Abraham and his descendants to be His family. As we all know, they constantly turned from Him and worshipped false gods and images that they had made (ie. golden calf), so God sent prophets to warn them and because of abounding transgressions against Him, gave them a standard of what He expected, which was the law. Well, they broke the law over and over and killed all the prophets that God sent, so God sent His Son, and they killed Him too.

Does that not make you angry? Why did God not just wipe all mankind off the face of the earth like He did at the time of Noah? He would have been completely justified. I know I would have just killed the whole lot of them. So often God had tried to get them to see that He alone is God and showed them miracles like the parting of the sea, manna falling from the heavens, water coming from a stone, as well as giving them victory over nation after nation. All God wanted was for them to glorify Him as God and be thankful, and they were neither. They wanted a god that they could see and wrap their hands around. They did not want to walk by faith. It reminds me of present day religion. Look around at modern Christianity in North America. We have a lot of people going around trying to prove to themselves and others that they are good Christians when all they are doing is frustrating the goodness, longsuffering, and grace of God. They are storing up wrath for themselves all the while clinging to religion that will never save them. Instead of just trusting God, they cling to religion, caring more what the person in the next pew thinks than God. Oh but for His mercy! What will Jesus say at that great wedding banquet to all those people who trusted in their good works and religion? Depart from me all ye who do iniquity, for I never knew you! All you whose gospels taught that gain is good, or was based entirely on self improvement, depart from me!

Do we really understand the breadth of this mercy? I am truly amazed everyday, all the while knowing that I will never comprehend the full measure. What God did at Calvary will be talked about in eternity for ten million years if there was such a thing as time. I can imagine myself walking throughout the heavenly city asking angels if they know about the mercy of God and what He did for mankind on the cross.

Oh, the love that drew salvation’s plan!
Oh, the grace that brought it down to man!
Oh, the mighty gulf that God did span
At Calvary!

The mercy of God gets me thinking of that day at the great wedding banquet when we will finally see Jesus. In the middle of the celebration Jesus will look around at all of the millions of saints and ask if anyone wants to say a testimony. I will put my hand up and Jesus will pick me and I will have no fear of public speaking in my new body and will stand and speak boldly of how I was once dead in trespasses and sins but was quickened! I will speak of how unworthy I was with my own righteousness and will tell all, of how Jesus became my sin so that I could become His righteousness, how He suffered and shed His blood so that my sins could be forgiven, and how He freed me from this dead body so that the law had no more jurisdiction over me, how I was freed from sin and how He rose again and baptized me into His body and seated me with Him on the right hand of power. Hallelujah! Then I will run to Jesus and throw myself at His feet and worship while everyone turns to Jesus, cheering and shouting "Worthy is the Lamb!" Wow what a picture! Oh the mercy of God.

I would encourage everyone reading this to think on things like this for it gives one's self a great hope for the future. It helps me get through the daily grind of this evil world with a hope that is ever present. It puts everything in perspective for me and I know without a shadow of a doubt that now as I have experienced God's grand mercy, I would rather be chained to the apostle Paul in prison, then be a citizen of the kingdom of this present world. I now have a constant abiding joy in my heart, that is not dictated by circumstance, but clearly tied into the great mercy that God showed us in His only begotton Son. This joy is new to me and I know that it is only possible by the Spirit of Christ and I truly hope that everyone reading this would also experience it with a simple faith in Jesus Christ. Do not make it harder than it is. Just look at what happened on calvary and believe it. Look to His mercy and never stop looking, and neither will your joy.

Romans 4:5 To him that worketh not but believeth on Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Jesus died for the UNGODLY! Friend, that is you and me!
It's a FREE GIFT. Dwell on that, FREE GIFT! You cannot do anything to earn it and and the only people the gift is offered to, is THE UNGODLY! This means YOU! This is wonderful news and you don't have to DO ANYTHING, just believe. It's not what you do my friend, it's what He has done... Tetelesti. It is finished.
